About:

Project is aimed for research of service quality and monitoring network infrastructure performance. It is obvious that need for performance and security features of network infrastructures is growing nowadays, according to convergence of voice, video and data services. Monitoring and ensuring quality of these services are very actual topics, which is also seen from activities of world leaders in communication.

Project goals can be distributed to four sections

  1. Development of IP flows information gathering tools
  2. Main goal of this section is development of BasicMeter tool in comformity with IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX) and Packet Sampling (PSAMP) specifications. These are actual output of workgroups in IETF organization. Original contribution above the specifications is measuring optimalization with different techniques involved in each BasicMeter component implementation:

    • enhancement of IPFIX information model with new information elements
    • sampling methods development with stress on system resources usage efficiency and validity of network service information
    • development of evaluation methods for service time characteristics - simplex and duplex as well
    • research and development of methods for measuring points time synchronization
    • adaptive IP flows information export implementation
    • new communication protocols development supporting real time network traffic monitoring
    • development of configuration protocols for user-friendly measuring tool parts setup
    • implementation of analysis application as user interface for monitoring tool
  3. Development of tools for network traffic monitoring
  4. Usage of BasicMeter tool in different application areas and its enhancement via modules:

    • network services billing
    • evaluation of Service Level Agreement (SLA)
    • computer network intrusion detection (IDS)
    • optimalizáciu sieťovej prevádzky, či už prostredníctvom reálno časovej optimalizácie prevádzky smerovacích protokolov, alebo nastavením frontových disciplín a ďalších mechanizmov QoS
    • junction of BasicMeter tool and other systems (eg. SYNETS system)
  5. Experimental implementation of monitoring tools
  6. The goal of this section is to collect experience from BasicMeter tool and its application enhacements implementation:

    • model tool implementation in laboratory environment and in real environment of computer networks
    • feedback and function testing for tools development
    • performance analysis of tools with throughput and system requirements as main characteristics
    • development of measuring platform for simple implementation
  7. Project team activity support
  8. This section features upkeep of supporting systems for effective team performance and presentation of its work:

    • Wiki
    • Trac
    • SVN
    • project servers upkeep
    • generation LaTeX documentation
    • creation of various presentation materials (images, animations, multimedia)
    • creation and upkeep of project webpage
